The term Plenum refers to certain spaces in buildings that are used for airflow, such as heating and air conditioning ducts. Since these ducts are generally oxygen rich, it is an area that has a higher risk of strengthening a flame in the event of a fire. Plenum rated cable is designed to be fire retardant, and employs a material that creates less smoke than other cable housings called polyvinyl chloride.

Buildings are now required to use plenum rated cable when wiring through plenum spaces. This cable will do the trick, also giving your network gigabit capabilities. Faster than normal cat5, this cat5e (E is for 'enhanced') will allow you to build a 10/100/1000 network.
